Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina Series In Development At The CW

Sabrina Spellman is coming back to television and this time she is heading to The CW! Warner Bros. TV and Archie Comics announced today that The CW is officially in early developing stages of a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina series from the creators of Riverdale.

Roberto Acquire-Sacasa, showrunner of Riverdale, will write the pilot and executive produce the series. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater, and Lee Toland Krieger are also attached to executive produce. Krieger, who directed the Riverdale pilot and several Season 1 episodes, would helm the pilot should the network go forward with it.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will take inspiration from Acquire-Sacasa’s comic series of the same title that depicts the character in a dark re-imagining. The show would serve as a companion series to Riverdale in the 2018-2019 television if The CW picks it up to series.

Warner Bros. TV, The CW, and Archie Comics provided the following logline of the series:

“THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

This will be the second live-action interpretation of Sabrina Spellman on television. Melissa Joan Hart played the character for 7 seasons in Sabrina the Teenage Witch which aired from 1996 – 2003, 4 years on ABC and the final 3 seasons on The WB.

There were initially plans to have Sabrina show up in the Season 1 finale of Riverdale. But given that everything that went down in the finale, the writers decided to wait with introducing Sabrina. Since it is being described as a companion series to Riverdale, it’s very likely that this new show will be in the same universe as Archie and his friends.
